Our most recently developed program is Treasured Time Pick-Up Activity. Its signature activity is Plant-a-Plant. We go into schools, after-school programs, and daycares, arranging for parents to help their child(ren) plant-a-plant when they come to pick them up (after they have worked all day). It’s free, and we take a picture of them together with the finished product – which we send to them later!
Why do we call it a “Pick-Up” activity? Is it because children are picked up, or is it because children are picking up valuable cues from their parents about good manners, social skills, and respect for elders? We believe it is both. Young families are typically short on both time and resources to create quiet “teaching” moments out in public for their children – for much needed joy and connection – that are convenient, affordable, fast and fun.
One more thought: The plant the parent and child(ren) take home promotes “taking responsibility,” because it will need to be watered once a week, and the photo becomes a reminder of the time they spent together.
