The Homestead Grounds, 205 Orchard Lane, Penngrove 94951, is a working homestead. The current residents are the fifth family to own the property since its division in 1909 from acreage bordering the Petaluma Washoe House Road (now known as Stony Point Road). It has always been (and still is) a working homestead – where income for the owners is generated through uses of the land and buildings, often from agricultural endeavors.
The Homestead Tour & Planting Experience is interesting and fun for the whole family, combining history of the homestead with Sonoma County and California history. You’ll learn about brush chipping, wood splitting, growing food, farm animals, and equipment storage – before passing through The Portal of Time – a 12 foot diameter standing art installation – a symbolic reminder that all decisions are important.
“As we walk forward, the past is streaming behind us, and we are moving into the future; there are no guarantees our plans (decisions) will come to fruition, but, if we don’t try, the future will unfold in a haphazard manner,” says Diane H. Davis, the artist that created The Portal of Time.
After visiting the Gift Shop, Art Studio and propagation areas, we settle into the Outdoor Classroom, where it's HAND ON! - everyone plants a starter plant in a ceramic cup to take home. We like to call the Homestead Tour & Planting Experience, where children feed the chickens, learn about farm animals, and they get to plant a plant:
Fun for the Kids!
Of course, it's fun for parents and grandparents, too.
